A century ago there were more than 200,000. They ruled the savannas of Africa and Asia with a quiet authority that needed no announcement — apex predators of extraordinary power, deeply bonded family animals, creatures of such ancient magnificence that every culture on earth has made them symbols of strength, courage, and nobility.

And we are losing them. Not dramatically. Not with headlines. Just slowly and steadily — one habitat destroyed, one prey base depleted, one human encroachment at a time — until the king of the savanna becomes a memory.

This painting stopped me.

I wanted to capture the lion not in motion, not in conflict, but in stillness — that particular quality of presence that only a creature completely at home in its own power can possess. The warm gold of the mane. The deep black behind him. And that eye — looking upward with a dignity so complete it borders on the sacred.

I painted him because I love him. And because 25,000 is not enough. And because somewhere in the looking — really looking — at what we stand to lose, something shifts. Something decides to show up. Something chooses to fight.
